Reds react to Government announcement on fans

Manchester United has issued the following statement in response to the prospect of fans being allowed to return to some grounds, depending on the tier restrictions in place, next month...

"We welcome today's announcement from the Government and we reiterate that we are ready to welcome fans back to Old Trafford, as soon as it is safe to do so.

"We will now work through the detail of the plan with the relevant authorities and await the announcement on the local restriction levels."

It has been suggested that the tiers allocated for each region will be confirmed on Thursday.

Stadia in tier three will remain closed to the public but, from 2 December, those in tier two can have 2,000 fans (or 50 per cent of capacity if this figure is lower) and tier-one grounds are allowed up to 4,000 supporters (or 50 per cent of capacity if this figure is lower), with social distancing measures in place.

In the meantime, United's game against Istanbul Basaksehir in the Champions League will be played behind closed doors on Tuesday night.
